How to Choose Best One
So many of us have tried diets (lots of them!) and started exercise programs? we know losing those extra pounds is good for us? we want to be healthier? we want to succeed? and contrary to popular belief we DO have willpower. So what's the problem?
Almost any of the commercial weight loss programs can work but only if they motivate you sufficiently to decrease the amount of calories you eat or increase the amount of calories you burn through physical activity each day (or both).
What Should I Look for In a Weight Loss Program?
- Make sure it is safe
- Slow, steady weight loss
Other important questions to ask of any potential weight loss program include:
- Does the staff consist of qualified counselors and health professionals such as registered dietitians, doctors, and exercise physiologists?
- Are food choices flexible and suitable?
- Are weight loss goals set by the client and/or the health professional?
- What percentage of people complete the program?
- What is the average weight loss among people who finish the program?
- What percentage of people have problems or side effects? What are they?
There are three main types of weight loss programs: clinical programs, non-clinical programs which may or may not be commercially operated, and do-it-yourself or support group programs.
The primary consideration in choosing a weight loss program is health. If you are severely overweight or have other health issues, it would be advisable to enroll in a clinical weight loss program. Obesity is a serious health problem which has physiological, social, and psychological issues. Health professionals, such as dieticians, psychologists, nurses, and doctors are available to you in a clinical program. They will be able to monitor weight loss and give expert advice concerning the dietary affects of other health issues.
Every weight loss program should begin with a full health assessment. Good commercially sponsored programs will also offer medical screening at the outset. If you are attempting to lose weight on your own, or perhaps with a job-based support group, you should always see your doctor before beginning the program.
